Reviews! All authors want & need them to gain & maintain a following for their work. Knowing the importance of book reviews, most authors who read, also tend to leave reviews. But could leaving a review for another author jeopardize your brand?

I’ve been a self published, “indie” author since 2012 and I’ve had offers from various publishing companies to sign with them. At this stage I’m wondering, “Should I?

I’m sure this is a dilemma many independent authors find themselves tackling with and I’m unsure whether I want to stay on my own for now or join a publishing company.

If you love to read books and/or are an author, you are probably a member of right? If not, you need to go ahead and sign up right now. It’s basically a facebook for readers and writers and if I’m not mistaken, Amazon has recently purchased them and has some sort of link with marketing.

Three years ago I was a few months away from turning 40 years old. I was about to OFFICIALLY be OLD! Of course, like a lot of people when you start feeling like you're getting old, I started thinking about all of the things in life I wanted to do but didn't and should have accomplished but hadn't.

So I decide to Google my name just to see what pops up. Of course, my website, various sites featuring my interviews, book trailers and sites authorized to sell Behind Closed Doors and Liar's Ball popped up. But something unexpected showed up too. A torrent website offering FREE downloads of BOTH of my books! What the HEEZY?! I didn't authorize that! That's illegal!

Okay so every author knows that the book cover is your FIRST form of connecting with a new reader. Although I have achieved success with my first book BEHIND CLOSED DOORS & my 2nd book LIAR'S BALL has already gotten a lot of great book buzz, sales & reviews, I still felt like it COULD be doing better.

Okay so typically, since I've published my book Behind Closed Doors, I have been blogging about the creative process and given some insight into the marketing, writing and publishing experiences I've gained. But today, I have what I am calling "Writer's Book Marketing Block."

So your book has been selling like hotcakes and receiving nothing but rave reviews. Book promotions have been going well and you're walking around smiling like you won the Mega Millions. You go to check your latest book reviews and are crushed! "What kind of bum would only give your book  2 out of 5 stars? What literary challenged imbecile wrote that they didn't enjoy your marvelous book?"

I have a fulltime job, I'm a full-time mom, I recently got engaged so I'm wedding planning, I'm writing the sequel to my first release which thankfully, readers have been hounding me for, AND on occasion I like to sleep. There aren't enough hours in the day! Regardless, if I want to keep up the sales momentum, gain new readers and keep my book relevant, it is imperative that I find the time to market within my hectic schedule.

Here are 5 tips to CRUNCH TIME MARKETING:

So you've just finished writing your book and you're planning to publish it yourself, or to shop it to publishing companies. Great! Now it's time to have your work proofread; or should you be getting it edited? Wait a minute, aren't those the same thing? NOPE!

As an author, it's only logical to assume you read. If you read, you undoubtedly have an opinion about the books you've read, so who better to write a book review than YOU right?Probably, but if you're promoting your OWN book for review at the same time...PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

One of the biggest concerns as an author when I'm going to do a book signing, make an appearance, or be involved in any event that will require people to show up is..."Is anybody going to show up?"

So my book BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by K.F. Johnson has been out for a little under 2 months, & I'm always looking for ways to promote it. If your pockets like mine, barely make you a thousandaire, let alone a millionaire, you should try one or all of these 5 tactics:

One of the reasons it took me nearly 10 years to write my book BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by K.F. Johnson, is because I began writing my novel in MS Word and when I needed to make corrections, find information, changes, reorganize scenes, expound on characters, etc., it was SO TIME CONSUMING and sometimes confusing. I often wished I had a FREE software that would help me organize scenes, thoughts, characters, notes, etc. to make life easier; so I googled it and POOF!

As with every day since I've released my book BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by K.F. Johnson, I'm always looking for new ways to promote the book and grab new readers. If you're like me, most authors are still working a 9-5 to bring home the bacon, so you probably have a LinkedIn account...right? Maybe? If not, get one!

Competition you say? Yes. You can enter your book for consideration in various award driven competitions; most of which have awards and/or cash prizes upwards of $1,000.

Maybe the best thing you've ever said is written inside the pages of your new book; but, besides publishing your book and posting links on your facebook, linkedin or website, you'll get the best "word of mouth" press via words from YOUR MOUTH.

“Oh you’re writing a book? That’s fantastic! I have another friend who wrote a book but they said it was REALLY hard to get it published. How are you going to market it? There’s so many books out there, how are you gonna get people to buy yours? Yadda, Yadda, Yadda.” Have you heard this or something similar before? Many people are skeptics by nature. Yes, they might be coming from a good place; looking out for your “best interest,” but THEY and THEIR FRIENDS, are not YOU.

Lesson learned and rectified NOW, (just uploaded the updated and now noted as the SECOND EDITION of my book on Amazon and for the paperback this afternoon which hopefully will be available in a matter of hours) and thank goodness it didn't hurt my book sales, but it did hurt my ego. If you are planning to self publish, like I did, please do the following things FIRST to make the writing process smoother and the publishing process less trying:
